INKSCAPE

Inkscape is a free professional vector graphic program similar to Adobe Illustrator. It works on the Mac computers in the computer lab but does not work on an iPad. Inkscape is used to create logos, illustrations, and designs for both the laser cutter and vinyl cutter.

It's important to note that Inkscape is not an online program, so all files are saved directly to the computer. Students are encouraged to save their work to the school server. This allows you to access the files from any computer at school!

1. Know how to access the school server!

The computers in the computer lab have a hidden feature no one knows about. There is an icon in the upper right of the screen for an application called Nomad. When you click on this, a pull down menu appears. This lets you view your desktop on the school server. If you save something to this folder, it will be accessible on any computer in either computer lab at school.

This is strongly recommended when using Inkscape because when you save it to just the computer, it's only available on that one specific device when you are logged in. This means you must use the exact same computer every time, which is not always possible.

2. Learn how to use Inkscape

YouTube Tutorials

Logos by Nick is the premier YouTube channel for learning Inkscape. There are many tutorials for beginner, intermediate, and advanced designers.

I recommend you start with his Inkscape Explained playlist, then move on to Inkscape Beginner Tutorials.

TJ Free is another excellent YouTube channel.

Unlike Logos by Nick, who exclusively uses Inkscape, TJ Free has tutorials for a wide variety of free open source tools. .

View his Inkscape Tutorials playlist.

3. Start Designing!

The best way to learn Inkscape is to watch the videos and practice what you learn.

Watch one video, then practice that skill for a few minutes. When you're ready, move on to the next video. While watching videos, please wear earbuds and/or turn on closed captioning.

I'm sure you're excited to make a vector for the laser cutter or vinyl cutter, but I strongly encourage you not to rush through this process. It's better to take your time and learn how to use Inkscape well rather than trying to quickly make something in one day and have it be a bad design.
